#Comic No.116-117 & The World Of Illustrated Weekly Of India

Friends recently i got an opportunity to put my hands over very early issues of The Illustrated Weekly Of India spanning from 1948 onwards.It was really a pleasure to go through these vintage issues.
Illustrated Weekly of India was started in 1880 named as "Times Of India Weekly Edition",later renamed as 'The Illustrated Weekly of India' in 1923 and continued weekly publication till 1993.
Now most important aspect of it is that it was the first Indian magazine to publish Phantom strips,earlier i was under impression that Phantom strips started publishing somewhere in 1940,but its not correct as i found Phantom strips in its 1957 issues,not before.Phantom strips continued in it till 1987 after which they were discontinued.
IWI used to publish only Phantom Sundays and those the current one only,before now i never saw any other strip other than illustrated by Sy Barry in IWI but in its issues of 1957 i found MCcoy strips too.Also these strips were used to be published in color(occasionally in B/W too) but later converted to full-fledged Black & White in 80's.
More on IWI will be continued in this very post but first let me present the comics for today post which are contributed by Ajay Misra,who possesses such a passionate enthusiasm for scanning and sharing comics that his passion is being carried to his next generation too.His kids Divish(son) & Parishi(daughter) helps in sharing his load by scanning comics and mailing the files to bloggers like me.This unmatched passionate attitude of Ajay and his family certainly deserves a open hearted appreciation.
As i also mentioned earlier that we use to fight but use to make it over soon without any unrecoverable damage.People try to take advantage of such indifferences by inciting and making fun and mockery of the situation without first having a look on themselves.

In the last post it was asked to identify a personality which was correctly identified by Venkit,Grouchy and Bharat.The personality was Vijay Mallya,the liquor barren,who was recently in news for bringing the personal belongings of Mahatma Gandhi back to India by bidding in a private Auction for it.

One more comic strip use to follow in IWI which is worth mentioning here.It was short stories illustrated by Kavadi.Have a look on a couple of them.




































Kavadi was another talented artist who didn't got his cake of glory.He use to draw the pictures which were associated with crime stories published in 'Satyakatha','Manohar Kahaniyan' etc.
His painted pictures were quite effective,have a look at one such of his drawing.




While browsing through these issues it was pleasant surprise for me to know that Abid Surti's another famous character "Azad" also use to appear in IW.Want to see it..?Here are few of them.



















































Can you identify the personalities in the picture given below!!They were/are very famous political personalties.Identifying four persons in the picture excluding the leftmost woman will be enough as the woman standing left most was not that much renowned and well known than the rest four.

#Comic No.115:Holi Post

A very warm and colorful Happy Holi wishes to all of comics lovers all over the world.
This time a Phantom strip (S-64) is being presented here which is in color but incomplete hence to supplement the missing pages they were scanned from Diamond comics Phantom Digest No.11
Coloring and inking of the strip is very impressing whereas same of Diamond digest is very ordinary to look at.

For Manoj Chitra Katha lovers here is a Holi Gift for them,a Sherbaz comic.Sherbaz was a popular character of early Manoj Chitra Kathas,somewhat similar to Private detective Kapil of Chitra Bharti Kathamala.Sherbaz was a freelancer private detective who use to solve mysteries on his own.His comics took good opening but were lacking with good illustrations and later on lost in mist of time.

#Comic No.113-114:Mask of Deception & The Treasure Trail

Last week a memorable incident happened.A friend,Mr.Vijay (Sr.G.M.Marketing in a Hyderabad based Electronic Co.),who is a passionate comic lover,a great poet and a magnificent photographer,came to meet me specially.He managed to take a day leave and traveled around 300+ Km extra from his schedule in order to pay a visit to yours truly. In his words he was eager to meet a person who was possessing collection of those comics which he had adored and admired right from his childhood,he was eager to put his hands over the worn off pages of those comics which were used to be his heartthrob during childhood. He came and met us and was very fulfilled and satiated after having a look at those comics which he longed from a long time. That evening we talked over comics,poetry,movies,gazals and photography, humble and noble attitude of Vijay made that evening memorable. Its really wonderful to acknowledge that how comics formed a bond between two strangers due to which a person did not even hesitated to bore the pain of lot of traveling and squeezed out ample time from one's busy schedule.

Friends 'VenKit' contributions has reached to CW also after obliging other Indrajal bloggers.So presented here are 2 comics contributed by Venkit (very nice scans), i don't know the status of these comics on net,they might have been posted before or might not be.In any case all thanks to Venkit.

#Comic No.111-112:Heere Ka Pyala & Sone Ka Mahal

As assured yesterday here is another comic of this very post,its IJC no.16 "Heere Ka Pyala" a Hindi Indrajal version of Sunday Strip No.39 (The Stolen Cup) which spanned from 17th October 1954 to 27th Feburary 1955.
Its Hindi version was never available on line before today,i think its English version has been posted at some blog,though not sure.This comic has been posted with the backing up request from Ajay Misra,yes,Mr Ajay Misra who has become a pioneer in comic scanning and sharing,sometimes i wonder how someone can have a passion of scanning/sharing comics of such a level!..how one can sustain such enthusiasm for sharing comics for such a long time.
Honestly speaking many of times due to lack of inspiring comments/motivation we bloggers find it difficult to keep our motivation level intact but this guy remains unaffected from all these things..he goes on simply scanning,scanning and scanning.
Ajay also possesses a great helping hand when it comes to extend help for arranging hard copies of comics.Initially due to some misunderstandings i developed a misconception about him that he might be running a 'comic' business but that was soon corrected when i realized the true spirit behind his efforts.
Still sometimes we do fight on some trivial issues due to communication gap but the intentions were/are always positive.
So friends enjoy this vintage IJC in the name of all selfless contributors and Ajay.

Friends presented here is another very early Manoj Chitra Katha,which were used to be in big format along with superb cover design by C.M.Vitankar.Here is another such gem "Sone Ka Mahal",which is the concluding part,unfortunately i am not having its 1st part.If anybody having it pls do share.

#Comic No.109 & 110:Sunehri Rajkumari and Teesmarkhan

Friends as i have already mentioned that this year has been quite productive for me in terms of comics,so on the same note very recently i found some of the rare missing Indrajals of mine such as No.4,5,12,13,15,18 etc...
Indrajal No.18 was not available on the net anywhere in any language up till now,therefore here its Hindi version for all of you.
This is a comic version of Sunday Strip No.12 which spanned from 14th January to 24th June 1945.The strip has been already posted at Prabhat's blog which can be downloaded from there.
Since its cover was missing hence its English version cover(courtesy:ICC) has been posted.I have asked Raj to provide its Hindi version cover(if he is having),hope he will respond positively.

2nd Anniversary Post

Dear friends,visitors and comic lovers from all over the world,today on 4th Feb. Comic World completes 2nd year of its existence.Thanks all of you for your love and association with Comic World during this period.

Whole two years have been passed after when a passionate comic lover jumps into a unknown and new field of blogging with a motive in mind to share,discuss,revive and relive the 'lost world' of childhood through the comics.The comics which forms the integral part of his childhood sweet memories.

What made me to form a comic blog has been already mentioned few times before,still if new visitors wish to read the reason behind it they can read it from here.
In these two years much has been changed,with the advent of numerous contributors the quota of 803 Indrajal comics is going to be depleted soon and all Indrajal comics will be available online,which is satisfying and encouraging as after that the platform for discussion on comics will be more solid and wide.Mere comic posting was not my only preference,rather healthy,worthy and thick comic discussions do attract me more,thats why my posting frequency was not very quick as i use to post only when i do have something to tell/discuss over that particular comic/post.
When this blog was started i was having only odd 75+ Indrajal comics along with few other old comic such as Manoj Chitra Katha,Superman etc,but within these 2 years i was able to build up a sizeable collection which currently comprises of Indrajals,Amar Chitra Katha,Tinkles,Manoj Chitra Katha,Madhumuskans,Deewanas,Tulsi Comics,Star comics,Frews,Gold keys and many other comics.In my house comics are lying everywere...in the book shelf purchased specially for comics,over the book shelf,stuffed in couple of bags as well as on my computer table also.
For me the beginning of 2009 has been proved quite productive regarding comics,as within January itself i got lots of comics consisting of many of my missing Indrajals as well as other comics such as Amar Chitra Kathas and other lesser known comics,which i took intentionally for the purpose of gathering information for Anupam's comic encyclopedia project.
Well,for this special anniversary post its kept in mind to satisfy the likes of the majority of comic lovers,and for that a variety of comics are being presented.
Starting with our favorite Indrajal comics,this particular issue "The Valley Of Living Dead" (Vol.20.No.49) is actually the reprint version of Indrajal No.19,"Moogoo's Dolls",which itself is the comic version of Sunday strip No.21 "The Haunted Castle" (12-09-1948 to 13-02-1949). Ardent Phantom enthusiast can easily find out that this strip actually is the combined work of two illustrator,namely Moore and MCcoy.The first two pages were illustrated by Moore whereas rest strip was taken up by MCcoy.

....and yes Anupam here is your requested comic.This is the first comic of 'Shuja' series,i remember reading a few more of them.This one is quite simple with a plain story,illustrations are by Govind Brahmania but nobody is credited as its writer.If anyone can throw some light on details of this comic,pls share with us the information.
