#Comic No.101:Kankaal Nagri

(Updated 9thJan 09':Download Link provided)

Few cartoons were sent today by a friend Vikas to me,since they are worth sharing with all of you.Hence here are they with all thanks to Vikas.)

Although all the Indrajal comics are very gripping and of worth collecting but Phantom/Mandrake Indrajals are unmatched in every aspect. Many such Indrajal comics are still missing in my collection but there are few Indrajals which i miss very much. One of a such comic is "The Ghost Town",which due to its attractive cover is among one of my favorite Indrajal.Yeah, this is same comic which was declared as the Mandrake comic with best cover in the last post.

I was not able to put my hands on this comic before today, hence now when this comic is in my hands,i can't stop myself before sharing this comic with all of you.Its English version has already been posted over net.

So friends presented here is "The Ghost Town" in the old classic format of posting scans of all pages which eventually will save the readers of like of "Silly Boy" from the problems associated with downloading whole comic via download link.

This comic deals with one of those strange, bizarre and adventurous incidents faced by Mandrake-Lothar duo during their journeys.

Imagine during a long journey you reach a deserted, scary and abandoned town. You fuels up your car tank from a local petrol pump there, the pump attender warns you against offering lift to any passerby in the way,in the way a 'ghost' passerby asks you for lift, the passerby alleges the 'pump attender' of being ghost, instead.Returning back to petrol pump for verifying you are astonished to found that whole petrol pump has simply vanished away.

Feeling a lill scary and considering yourself as new avatar of Sherlock Holmes you decide to investigate the strange happenings around you.In the deserted nearby hotel of the town you come up across with strange and haunting incidents, and finally in the basement of hotel if you happen to bump across with Osama Bin Laden,Adolf Hitler and Mussolini then what will be your initial reaction...!!!!!

Think, what would have happened to Mandrake-Lothar duo when they would have come across with a similar situation!!!!..Can't guess.....,ok witness yourself the happenings by reading this comic.

Friends for enabling up this post to hit the blog screen in quick succession with the last post a reader "Sill Boy" has a major role in it.One would ask how, then sometimes it do happens that a single comment leaves a impact which is equivalent to 100 comments, and that's exactly what this comment did:

Silly Boy wrote:-

"Great work pal for the 100th post. It is very disappointing that you are not sure about 1000th post. I wish you would not be discouraged and go on posting. I wait for your new post with the same eagerness as I used to wait for new Parag, Madhu Muskan, Inderjal or a new Motu-Patlu or Chhotu Lambu comic and that too despite the fact that other then comics which you post with each post (as you posted Popat-Chopat comic or as you used to post in the past) I am not able to read your posts because the only computer I have is provided by my office and it does not have the software required for downloading the comics. Continue with your good work. I am agree with you that we should use this forum more for discussion. I enjoy your inputs about comics and want more. But you cannot overlook the facts that most of your visitors like me do not have such a great and huge collection as you have and that is why they want to quench the thrust of reading comics with the nector of comics you provide to them. It would be better if you provide inputs with comics. I quench my thrust just by watching the covers and reading your inputs and at times with 3/4 page comic which you post on your main page without downloading link. You always answer long comments. Thank you.

It's mainly due to this vibrant comment that i could have inspired myself enough to bring up this post so quick.I hope that a large no. of comments will come up with healthy, meaningful and thick discussions over comic and comic related topics, which unfortunately was not happened with the last post where a topic was put up and readers views were invited.

*************************************************************************************

Silly Boy wrote:-

"Not at all, dear CW.This was your 100th post,so had to register. Iam a regular entrant in some of the blogs that seem to acknowledge me and my comments. Also they dont get fed up with same guys commenting time and again(iam one of those guys). Comic collection to a xtent does go in our head sometimes....but it wud be wrong to mix with emotions that go along with posting and other things. Hope you understand. CHANDAN"

Thanks for your kind words pal. I am really honoured. My interests with regard to comics and films are so similar to your interests that sometimes I feel that I myself running Comic World in my sub-conscious. Do not have much time today. Subsequently, I shall write a long comment about an important aspect of buying old comics. By the way yesterday while searching for old comics I came across December 2008 issue of Children's Digest in which they carry a long comic feature by the name of 'Detective Arjun'. It reminds me Dara of Inderjal fame. It is a continuing story and next part must be in Jan. 2009 issue. If you can please go through it and tell me your opinion about it. I do not have a scanner otherwise I must scann the same to your E-mail. Last but not the least thanks for posting the whole comics on main page. Still waiting for diwana post.

Silly Boy: You are welcome buddy. Its really a honor for me as well as for all visitors of Comic World that you are feeling yourself so deeply attached to it.
The sole purpose of this blog is to cherish our lost childhood by reviving the memories associated with the comics which we had read in those times,i am happy that the blog is successful in attaining its purpose.
Unfortunately i am not in much touch with the present era comics because of lack of interest in them hence can't put up any opinion about the 'Children Digest'.
The current comics which i still sometime use to purchase are 'Doga','Dhruv','Nagraj' series of Raj comics, apart from these i use to look only for old comics whenever i can find opportunity.
I am hoping to get soon around 50 copies of Deewana which i purchased recently, will be posting them subsequently, and yes waiting for your long comment on aspect of buying old comic.
If you like Indrajals then do let me know how did you find "Kankaal Nagri".

Good cartoons buddy. Besides collecting comics I also collect cartoons - both from newspaper as well as from magazines - and have a huge collection of the same. As and when I will have a scanner I shall send the best of them to you so that you can share them among our comic loving community through your blog. As far as that Kankal Nagri comic I can say that it is one of the best Mandrake comics. I love Phantom and Mandrake comics and read them whenever I find them though my information about their creation was limited only to the fact that I knew that Lee Falk created them. Now thanks to you and other blogs that I know something more than that. I also do not find the present ear comics interesting enough and even do not like the current Raj Comics series. But again request you to go through that Children's Digest Comic on my recommendation. Now through your blog I want to raise an important issue which concerns all of our comic loving community. Sometimes ago I found a lot of Diwana and of about 100 comics. The shop-keeper asked 10 per copy. (He used to sell old comics to me between 5 to 10 rupees according to the value of the comic though always asked Rs. 10 at the first instance). As I come Diwana magazeines in lot for the first time I was at a loss that what price I should offer him. I told him that I would come the following day and paid him Rs. 200/- as token money for reserving the comics for me. If you remember I sent a comment to you and raised a query that at what price I should buy those magazines. Your suggestion was that Rs. 5 would be appropriate. The next day I went to his shop and he told me that he had sold to those comics to another comic lover who had paid Rs. 30/- per comics to him and returned my Rs. 200/-. I was disappointed but not sad as those comics went into the hand of another comic collector. Real problem starts from here. That shop-keeper and later I found that almost all the old book sellers raised the price of old comics exaggeratedly. Say the Old Inderjal which I used for get between 5 to 10 are selling at a price of 30 to 50.The reason for this some of us are taking them at those prices. Some of us are nodding against their unjustified demands. I know these gems are priceless. But they are priceless for us - the comic lovers not in the eyes of these touts (yes I am calling them touts.) We are concerned even about advertisement pages of our beloved Inderjal and they stood on it and call them as "MAAL". I know these gems are becoming scare day by day and due to competition there is bound to be some rise in prices. But that does not mean that we should bow to their unjustified demands. I agree that there should be a healthy competition between the comics lovers that who should the physical copy of these gems. But this should be healthy. This should be in the sense that who would go to the market first and secure these gems first. The mantra should be that the earliest comic lover has the first right on the comics and not the material consideration. We should not allow these touts(shopkeepers) to take undue benefit of our love for comics. I do not know whether you are agree with me or not. If you are agree with me then spread this message to our comic love community through your blog. Thanks for reading such a long comment.

Silly Boy: It would be nice to to share your collected cartoons with other readers too.Waiting for you to 'arrange' them.
You will be surprised to know that just one and half year before i was also unaware of the in depth informations about Indrajal comics,i use to consider that 100+ odd Indrajal comics, which i was having till the beginning of 2007, as the total no. of Indrajal published by Times of India, and was quite happy and satisfied by having them with me.
It was only after the discovery of a blog (TCP) that i came to know more about indrajal comics,i came to know that there exists certainly many more Indrajal comics.
It was that triggering moment which shook violently the hibernated comic lover in me and i was after Indrajal comics with my sharpened claws and nails to hunt them where ever i can.Yes it has became a hunt now as after arrival of many Indrajal based blogs the curiosity, nostalgia and interest of Indrajal lovers has revived and all those 'Indrajal era' avid readers has been turned into passionate collectors, who are ready to pay handsome amount to relive their childhood passion again.
Since they are in better 'financial' condition than a comparatively newer and younger unemployed/newly employed Indrajal 'addict',hence are in far better advantageous position to win the hunt.I think this possibly would explain about the question which you have raised on buying old comics aspect.
I certainly don't favor it and is very much against it as many of times i have also suffered due to this 'victory of the spendthrift' policy.
In my opinion it would be of no use to ask or make any appeal to follow 'Que' and healthy competitiveness policy as i don't think that anybody will pay any heed to it.
I will be looking for children digest from now,can you let me know something more about its publishers and place of publication.

Hi,
First of all big thanks to EVERYONE in the uploading comics community - even though I personally don't care that much to "relive" the Indrajal comics. I would rather forget all about the numerous cheap action rip-offs like Fauladi Singh, rajan-iqbal etc. :)
But for me personnally, even bigger thanks to YOU for posting Madhu Muskan. That comic rocked in so many different ways - the humour of the Asterik clone Daaku Paan Singh (Supari Lal being a combo of the the clever Asterix AND the druid) while Paan Singh being a more tough oblesik was just fantastic. Babloo, Daddyjee all were great. But what I really loved was the sly humour - the cranky boss of Daddyjee turned out to be the editor of the Madhu Muskan comic, the "Dunderheads" of Maya Puri taking part in their own special olympics because of the failure of their real-life counterparts in winning medals, etc. Just fantastic.

"Lot-pot" was no where near Madhu Muskaan's class

Would we have more please? Plus right now, you seem to have just scanned images for some of these stories, would we have proper downloadables?

thanks!

KK: Thanks and welcome on Comic World.Well, this blog was started keeping in mind to relive all the comics of our childhood and Indrajal comics in special. With the due course of time this blog shifted towards posting of likes of Madhumuskans,Deewana and Manjoj Chitra Katha after when several other fabulous blogs devoted to Indrajals came into picture.
There are fans of each comic series who, naturally, don't care much for other comics apart from their liked ones.
Madhumuskans are also one of my favorite as its simple humor imparted by simplistic art work specially by Jagdish was simply superb.I still wonder why and what made to close down such a entertaining series.
I remember and have that particular comic in which the 'Mayapuri Wasees' organize their private Olympic with special events and rules.
I was hesitating to post complete Madhumuskan with the apprehension in mind that would there be enough readers for them or not.
I am still wishing and waiting for more Madhumuskans readers to come forward.

Hey, Don't get me wrong, I did like Indrajal comics back in the day - especially "chalta-phirta pret". I used to think he was a totally "Indian" superhero. :-)

Infact, the first book I read on my own was a Hindi Rip Kirby that I borrowed from the local garage circulating library. (I remember Tintins used to cost 1 rs).

My reason for NOW rating Madhu Muskaan higher is two fold:

1) back them I always thought of the Indrjals as poor man's Superman. :)

The richer kids used to talk knowingly about the Supermen, the Batmen, the Spidermen. And let's face it, all of us longed for the chance to devour the American comics on the rare occasions we got our hands on them.

2) Except for the superb Bahadur, and despite being in Hindi, the Indrajal comics are not desi comics. :)

Comic World said...

KK: Well, its true that Indrajal are not desi comics, but while reading them i never felt any sort of 'alienation' towards them as because 1st,i use to read them in Hindi and 2nd,Bahadur the 1st desi character never let me to feel any such non-indigenousness.
You will be surprised to know that Lee Falk, creator of Phantom, initially planned the origin of Phantom in India, yes,in India. In the initial strips of Phantom his home is depicted in Bengal and his adventures were also shown been occurring in Bombay and Calcutta.
As far as me is concerned i never longed/craved to read any of 'English' comic as Superman,Batman,Green Lantern etc all were being published in Hindi by DC comics that time and i was quite happy to devour them.

Anonymous said...

i never felt any sort of 'alienation' towards them
I agree with you. The phantom has always been "ours" in a way Superman never was. :) And indrajal comics will always have a place in our hearts. It is just that for me personally, I see no reason to get nostalgic about them. After all the Phantom is in no danger of being forgotten. :)

Comic World said...

KK: Yeah, completely agree with you that never feel so 'attached' with Superman/Batman etc as with Phantom.
We are not at all nostalgic for Phantom, infact rather we are nostalgic about those moment, those memories which are associated with those specific Indrajal comics, which we have read in our childhood, and revisiting/reading those comics again generates nostalgic 'kick',which off course we do enjoy very much.

Alright CW, it is!

Random babbling - ignore if you want. :) Plus, it is addressed to everyone.

If a language wants to have a good selection of classic, "literary" books, it is important for it to have a thriving market for popular "pulp" literature.

Lot Pot, Madhu Muskaan, the filmy rags in Hindi - all are important for precisely this reason. Re-discovering them, has made me really happy.
