Hi,
Getting a new comic in the Indrajal blogs is becoming rarer these days with ICC and TCP silent for about a month. Nice covers. Be it an Indrajal or a Frew, the Phantom is the Phantom. So your wish.
Many thanks
pattu
Well for covers... and the stories?
I think it is a good idea if you post also Phantom Frew stories, because most of these are unknown to Phantom readers.
Aniway thanks!

Hi friends
I have always wondered why we indians are avid Phantom phans. As you will see practically all the blogger sites dedicated to the GhostWhoWalks or Chalta-Bolta Samandh as we say in Marathi are operated by our proud countrymen. Its no coincidence. The only other folk who sort of come near us are the Aussies. Australia has a huge Phantom phans. When I lived in Sydney in the late 80's,there used to be a visiting Phantom exhibition by dedicated Phantom Aussie Phans displaying all the Phantom memorablia including paintings, carricatures, statues, hand crafted gift items, T Shirts and what not.I particularly remember a statue of Phantom riding on a Kangaroo w3hich was kinda cute.Boy, what a site. I felt like a kid in a candy shop. I dont know wheather they still do it. The then Aussie premiere Mr Bob Hawke was a sworn Phantom Phan. I used to buy the Aussie Frew Phantom issues which unfort. had not the same magic of Indrajal as they were in black and white since we are used to seeing our hero in the purple cloak with the dazzling blue belt in the thick of DeepWoods. So coming to the point, why we indians are Phantom crazy? Is it because we are dreamers? Same logic for being 'Bollycrazy'? No I dont think so. Yes, we are dreamers but one must remember, Phantom is a perfect hero and a role model. He is sworn enemy of injustice and helps the needy in a very diverse but egalitarian world of Denkali and the Phantom country where there can be seen all races, even alien human forms such as little people and gold people etc. Phantom is shown to be an atheist with no overt strong religious preferences and I think this blends in well with our indian psychie which continues to thrive in a free society with strong cultural and democratic values. Its no surprise that Phantom remains popular in the free world of Australia, North America and the Europe but by any standards I think we indians remain the best Phantom Phans continue to lead the world in carrying the Phantom Philosophy forward.
Dedicated to Mahabali Vetal and all you lot for making this possible on the world wide web.

Thank you CW!
Nice post Dr. Gokhale! Welcome to our Phantom blog world! Hope you have many happy days here!

#Dr.Ravindra:Very well explained Dr.Sb.,yes i totally agree with you that we Indian are more avid Phantom fan than any other country of the world.Had the Indrajal Comics been still in publication the no. of Indian fans would be umpteen folds.
Frew in Australia is in publication from 1948 and still running thus helping newer generation developing acquaintance with Phantom so its not any wonder if "Phantom Tsunami" raises there but the impact and wave which Indrajal comics created in the short span (1964-90)is unmatched.
One might simply agree with that Indrajal Comics were best among all Phantom Publications in all aspects such as selection of stories, printing and price.
As you already explained the reason of Phantom being so popular here that in Phantom we identified a role model who raises with normal human power and develops strong skills to fight with injustice and cruelty,we also find in Phantom a emotional corner for his wife, kids and other downtrodden/helpless peoples where he unconditionally helps them to eliminate their problems and here we find parallax of our own sentiments in him.
The character of Phantom is very humble, simple and without any arrogance or proud. He didn't boast of any of his heroic deeds,he is modest and down to earth in nature, there is not any greed in his character although he owns (caretakes)the world most worthy treasure,he is exemplary loyal to his girl frnd (wife),he never drinks or smokes,he is a staunch supporter of democracy,he is always ready to lend helping hands to everybody in need...thus having all those qualities which we Indians admire and praises within the depth of our hearts.
Dr.Sb. its nice to find such a avid thinker and expressive "phan" on CW..looking for more of your inputs with time.Do keep visiting:o)
Hi Cw,
as u said "Indrajal Comics were best among all Phantom Publications " ...yup, am fullly agree with u :-))
IJC published not only best COLORED stories of Phantom, but they were best for so varity of charactersTHAT KEEEP READERS AFRESH .....as another Falk's creation - Mandrake with Flash/Bahadur etc ....while FREW publish only Phantom B/W strips without any edit [down-side's they don even edit those dates/copyright tags to give a real-comic-book feelings (like IJC did) rather a collection of strips !]
Also 50% of FREW comic r NON-FALK stories which r really don appeal me :-((
So, it's NO DOUBT Indrajal was (is n will)BEST among Phantom/Mandrake publications (even hamara DC was NO MATCH with Indrajal)
.... we hope in FUTURE some publication (may b ToI itself!)will re-start this series :-()
Hi CW friends
Thanx 4yr comments about my post. Since re-discovering IJCs and Phantom,so many of my child hood memories have resurged and wd like2 share with you.I grew up in a joint family like many of us as my dad and uncle and their families shared a big house. We were 5 kids growing up together. My uncle subscribed to IJC ad we all including the grown ups got hooked on it.We each had our preferences, usually gals preferring Mandrake and boys Phantom and Flash Gordon. We obviously named our sisters Narda the farer one and Karma, the darker one. One of the nasty neighbours automatically became Lucifer and a gentle giant next door Lothar.A rather pot-bellied kid was Guran, a pretty one Rex,a darker boy Tom-Tom. We couldnt name our dog devil, but Hero instead.IJC unfort did not bring out any Phantom memorablia but I did win a consolation prize in one of their painting competitions. My room which I shared with my Grandpa (Old man Mozes) became The Skull Cave.I wd draw Phantom riding on 'Toofaan-Hero with Waghya-Devil and soon became an expert. All my note books were full of Phantoms, his skull and peace 'nishans' and I even have their rubber stamp made courtsey of a school mate whose father owned a stationary shop.A bearded surgeon, friend of my dad became Dr Axel and a pipe smoking retired colonel obviously Col Weeks and his bobbed daugter called Hema became Caroline, if you remember I think the escaped convict story featuring Pretty and Moogar who kidnapp Caroline, Col Weeks' daughter and put her in hanging cage as an exhibit in a convict town whose name escapes me right now cos' I had a few beers. My cousin had audacity to tell Hema that she should paint some freckles and pimples on her face to live up to her name!! She nearly agreed as she was also a Phantom fan. She is in States now as we still refer to her as Caroline, poor Col weeks having kicked the buckett is no longer with us and Col Worobu was not forthcoming. The newspaperman wd deliver the IJC during the day fortnightly which was a major event when we used to be at school. Naturally the grown ups would get their hands sorry paws on it first. My mum and dad were not pro comics as they felt it was spoiling our spoken marathi language but my uncle and aunt loved it.So they wd read it first, followed by my elder cousin-brother and them me and the gals. This was the heirarchy which rarely changed and I even thought of bribing the newspaper boy so that I cd get it first.Sometimes me and my cousin had a 'khoonnas' and then he wd hide the most current issue until I apologised. My cousin used to dote on Phantoms Diana and wd draw beutifull pics of her.I remember in one of the stories,I think 'adhbhut burkhadhari (marathi for the 'masked marvel') when Phantom and Diana have a little tiff, my cousin almost cried. Obviously the comics were read upteen no. of times, then wd be shared with some selected neighbours. I started securing them together as the pages wd come loose and then professionally bound (Rs 5). Often I wd take the issues to my school to share it with my close friends and soon I became a Comic dealer. Dont remember charging any thing for this servise though. At times I wd have 10-20 comics in my school bag instead of my study books and when my dad found it he got pretty wild. Naturraly I was labelled as 'Bhoot-Pissach'- haunted by the GhostWhoWalks by my family members. In school at 'off period' often the whole class wd be reading my Phantom comics. Some kids wd even read during the class often caught by the teacher. One nasty one even confiscated my comics and reported me to the head as a 'supplyer-dealer. I have never forgiven him since and still some times wish that he wd burn in Hell as I discovered that he also developped an apetite for my Phantoms and strated practically stealing them from me as he never returned them. So the operation became rather clandestine as we all learned our lesson. I clearly remember, i was in 6th or 7th standard at NMV High School, Pune 10 or 11 yrs old and that wd bee just over 35 yrs back.We quicly picked lots of Phantom words and the 'old man sayings from the Marathi Mahabali Vetal and i even remember writing an essay on 'Eden' naming all my favorite characters-Jumba, Kateena, Fluffy,Baldy, Soloman-Nefertity the beutifull dolphins,
This is the story so far..may be more later if time permits. You probabaly wont appreciate this so much and I hope it is not too boring as you can see this is a very personal exp.
Ravindra Gokhale "Ravi"
#Ravi:We all have similar story of our childhood embellished with Phantom memories so there is not any chance of getting bored.I too like to share my memories associated with that particular comic which i posts on blog, hope you've been reading them.
As a kid i started reading Indrajals from the time just when they were about to be published weekly from usual schedule of fortnightly but i don't remember how do i started them as neither we were joint family and nor my parents were having any tradition to subscribe comics/magazines at that time...what i deduce is that since i was/am having a strong affinity towards any kind of books and nearby my old house there was a shop which used to sale old magazines/comics.I use to save my pocket money so that i can buy Indrajals from that old man whom i know as "Pundit ji"...i use to get 25 paisa/day (sufficient then for a kid of medium middle class family)as pocket money and the old indrajal was priced at half of its cover price..so it take me 2 days to save the money so that i can buy 1 indrajal.I never remember that ever i did subscribed to a new indrajal....all was i use to buy them from 'Pundit Ji'.
Soon i and my one friend even use to open a library of our collected books in summer vacations where other nearby kids used to rent these comics from us and we use to 'earn' some money to buy our regular dose of comics (Indrajals,Manoj/Diamond Comics).
This process continued till 1985 when we shifted to our new house and in this transition i lost a major chunk of my collection...after this strangely i hooked more to my other 'love' i.e cricket and comic love lagged a bit also due to other reasons such as non-availability of any book/comic shop nearby.
Although i still use to run library in summer vacations this time with the help of my younger brothers who also developed a affinity towards comics but they were more hooked to Raj/Diamond comics...gradually comic love took a back seat while cricket was in full flow although i use to collect indrajals whenever i could find and 'buy'.
Lots of years passed..i completed my engg. degree..then completed post graduate engg. degree... got a job in other state, became net savy..then a odd day i searched google for Indrajal comics..after few attempts TCP was discovered.... and the old suppressed Indrajal volcano in me erupted...read a majority of comics posted there...and the hunt for Indrajals was on now with full feoricity as for me reading comics on paper rather than reading on computer was always preferable....
Searched for these timeless comics at places whenever i got chance and luckily i was able to build up a quite considerable collection within a period of few months....and the hunt is still on.
I think enough for time being although i have much much more to share which i will be sharing subsequently.
