# Phantom Diamond Comics

We already know that Diamond publication issued around 100+ Phantom digests right from year 1990 in full color but the printing and paper quality of these digests were not the very best with the only consolation of their being in unedited format.
Recently Diamond publication issued few more Phantom Digests(information about exact no. of issues is not yet confirmed) with better printing and page quality in B/W format.

`

With B/W format and better printing the quality has certainly been improved and i am sure serious Phans won't let go the opportunity to have these in their collection.

`

`

According to the information available at present four such digests(No.9,15,18 and 21) are in the market priced at Rs.50/-each(As already pointed out by Ajay Misra at his daughter's blog) in English and Hindi language.

Diamond publication seems immovable of falling comic popularity and sale and goes on churning out huge volumes of comics with lakhs of copies all over India featuring mainly Chacha Chaudhry,Billo,Pinky and digests such as Pitara,Comic World which also contains those Phantom and Mandrake strips which were not published in Indrajal comics or in previous Diamond Phantom digests.
For eg. have a look at this strip No.D-176(Blackie) which according to my information was never published before in Indrajal comics or in Diamond Phantom digests but its available in one such Comic World/Pitara Digest of Diamond publication.

Though the printing is so-so and also the panel proportioning is not proper and has been compressed to fit in the given space but still its nice and worth collecting to have a Phantom strip in color which was not available before in Indian comics.

If we compare between two major surviving Hindi comic publications i.e. Raj and Diamond comics then sales-wise Diamond comics is far above than Raj comics and the reason behind which i can analyze is that sensing the comic market downfall Diamond comics sticked  to their most popular characters(Chacha Chaudhry,Billoo,Pinky etc) rather than flooding and experimenting with a galaxy of characters, the policy, which their counterpart Raj comics didn't adopted and now are finding it very hard to maintain the sales graph of all their comic characters.
On the other hand Diamond also didn't experimented much with modulation of story line according to the changing taste(?) and rather glued to the very basic of their characters which suits most to the typical Indian middle class parents mentality who still prefers to buy Diamond comics simple, clean and fair characters comic for their kids rather than going for the high tech Raj comics printed on glossy paper with a high price tag and 'objectionable' covers.

So in a nutshell Diamond comics are still flying in colors while Raj comics can be often seen giving hue and cry about its falling sales in specific and comic popularity in general.

Why have you used word "objectionable covers" for Raj comics ? Please explain. Very fine stuff regarding phantom publication by Diamond comics in black & white format. As far as i know, Diamond comice never published black & white comics before (but i am not sure) I have checked Diamond comics site but no information regarding these b/w phantom's issues. How to get these copies ? Thanks for sharing your valuable knowledge.

Anon: Welcome,it would have been nice if you have a left a name also.

Tiger: The word objectionable is used for those covers containing of revealing female characters or illustrations showing intimate hugging and follow-up kissing scenes(of Kobi,Bhediya etc)which typical middle class Indian parents won't approve for their wards.
These Phantom B/W copies you can get from any comic book stall as they are available everywhere.

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH THE COVERS ISSUE.NOW A DAYS COMICS COVER ARE MORE OF A FILMI MAGAZINE ALLURING THE PEOPLE.

Absolutely Right Comic World ! It is hard to understand why Raj Publishers are using 'Curvaceous n Voluptuous female figure' in covers (to allure children !)More than a decade ago , they published 'ILU ILU' stickers consisting of hugging n kissing picutures !

on the other hand, Diamond comics never used this 'weapon' to sell their comics except one or few. One title which is coming in my mind is "Mahabali Shaka aur Paap Ki Devi" (this 'Paap Ki Devi in Bikini type dress ! Though I enjoyed this cover and still enjoying :) but certainly not suitable for children)

In 'Radha Comics', publisher used this 'deadly weapon' in SHAKTIPUTRA's comics named 'Madam Black Stone' & 'Nark Ke Bhagwaan' (full Cleavage Show in these two comics, in 'Nark Ka Bhagwaan' there was one bedroom scene! If you don't believe see it yourself)Though storyline of Shaktiputra's comics is superb ,just matchless , only drawback was vulgar scenes (Madam Blackstone was enjoying with one negro slave). These comics deserves 'A' certificate !
What you say Bro comic world

Tiger: Yes,Bro i agree with you the Diamond publication seldom crossed the border line and that was mainly in Surendra Suman illustrations where female figures were,as you said,Curvaceous n Voluptuously drawn(in initial Mahabali Shaka comics)but if these exceptions are left behind then they always did sticked to Chacha Chaudhry simple humor,Raman-Billoo-Pinky's simple and clean stories and Channi Chachi's household stories which did appealed to every section rather than Raj comics who are trying to allure teenage children by these sort of soft 2X covers.

TIGER said...

Sorry to disturb u again, but you forgot to say few words about Shaktiputra's comics in Radha comics.
Thanks for your detailed reply to each n every comment

Comic World said...

Tiger: First of all no need for you to say sorry as i love discussion on comics/novels hence any sort and length of comment about comics/novels is more than welcome.
Regarding Shaktiputra comics, unfortunately i was not much into these later era comic such as Radha,Fort,Goyal,Parampara,Durga and other comics.I stopped reading any new publication comics after i came across with the deteriorating quality of Raj comics, though initial Raj comics are one of my favorite but when Dhruv began fighting with aliens, ghosts, witches and other insensible characters in indigestible stories then my attraction with these modern comics subsided and i ceased reading any more of these.
After your words about Shaktiputra i will try to read some of his comics which i have in my collection.

Thanks for your warm welcome :)

Do you remember Diamond Comics used to publish new hindi movies in black & white strip format with colored cover. I used to read it on rental basis :)

But these strips didn't get much success & hence vanished ! Do read 'Shaktiputra aur Naya Bhagwan' & Shaktiputra aur Hitler Ka Bhoot' awesome stories. Though sci fi but quite interesting and Madam Black Stone (not for story line but 4 urs eyes only ! :)

Comic World said...

Tiger: Yes,i do remember very well those Filmy comics published by Diamond comics which usually were printed in B/W,and i also use to read them on rental basis.
Story of the movie 'Tezab' was the first one to be printed in color and later on followed by 'Shahenshah',i have few such comics in my collection.
